6.3. O Comando `apt-cache`

O comando apt-cache pode apresentar grande parte das informações armazenadas no banco de dados interno do APT. Esta informação é uma espécie de cache, pois é recolhida de diferentes fontes, listadas no arquivo sources.list. Isso acontece durante a operação do apt update.

VOCABULÁRIO Cache

O cache é um sistema de armazenamento temporário usado para acelerar o acesso frequente de dados quando o método de acesso habitual é caro (em termos de performance). Este conceito pode ser aplicado em diversas situações e em diferentes escalas, desde o núcleo de microprocessadores até sistemas de armazenamento de alta qualidade.

In the case of APT, the reference Packages files are those located on Debian mirrors. That said, it would be very ineffective to go through the network for every search that we might want to do in the database of available packages. That is why APT stores a copy of those files (in /var/lib/apt/lists/) and searches are done within those local files. Similarly, /var/cache/apt/archives/ contains a cache of already downloaded packages (see sidebar APROFUNDANDO O cache dos arquivos .deb) to avoid downloading them again if you need to reinstall them after a removal.

Por outro lado, é obrigatório rodar apt update regularmente para atualizar o cache. Senão o resultado da sua busca por pacotes sempre vai perder as ultimas atualizações distribuídas pelos espelhos Debian.

The apt-cache command can do keyword-based package searches with apt-cache search keyword. It can also display the headers of the package's available versions with apt-cache show package. This command provides the package's description, its dependencies, the name of its maintainer, etc. Note that apt search, apt show, aptitude search, and aptitude show work in the same way.

ALTERNATIVE axi-cache

apt-cache search é uma ferramenta muito rudimentar, implementando, basicamente grep em descrições de pacotes. Que muitas vezes retorna resultados demais ou nenhum quando você incluir muitas palavras-chave.

axi-cache search expressão, por outro lado, oferece melhores resultados, ordenados por relevância. Ele usa o Motor de busca Xapian que faz parte do pacote apt-xapian-index que indexa toda a informação do pacote (e mais, como o arquivo .desktop de todos os pacotes Debian). Ele sabe sobre marcas (veja a barra lateral INDO ALÉM O campo Tag) e retorna os resultados em questão de milissegundos.

Some features are more rarely used. For instance, apt-cache dumpavail displays the headers of all available versions of all packages. apt-cache pkgnames displays the list of all the packages which appear at least once in the cache.

One of the features which might come in handy more often is apt-cache policy, described in the following section.

6.3.1. The `apt-cache policy` Command

The apt-cache policy command displays the pinning priorities and distribution properties of each package source as explained in Seção 6.2.5, “Gerenciar prioridades de pacote”. It can also show the pinning priorities for all available versions and sources of a package. For the sources.list example used in Exemplo 6.2, “arquivo /etc/apt/sources.list para usuários do Debian Estável” and APT::Default-Release set to "bullseye", the output will look like this:

apt-cache policy também pode mostrar as prioridades de pinning para todas as versões disponíveis e fontes de um dado pacote.

Although there is a newer version of limnoria in the bullseye-backports repository, APT will not install it automatically based on the priority. One would have to use apt install limnoria/bullseye-backports or add a higher pinning priority to /etc/apt/preferences.d/limnoria.pref:
